About AU

AU is an independent commentary publication about the systems, habits and ideas that shape ordinary life.

It is interested in the places where comfortable explanations fail: institutions that no longer serve their purpose, technologies that alter behaviour faster than norms can adapt, incentives that produce absurd outcomes, and social conventions that survive because nobody asks why.

AU is not a daily news service and it is not organised around a political tribe. It publishes essays, arguments and shorter notes. The aim is not provocation for its own sake, but clarity — including when clarity is uncomfortable.

The name carries two meanings. AU is the publication’s mark. Read aloud, “au” is also an instinctive reaction to pain: a small signal that something hurts and deserves attention.

AU is written by Adam Ullmann, a pseudonymous author who remains deliberately secondary to the publication and its ideas.
